9/8 afternoon ...After having our swimming attempt rejected at Hot Creek, we drove up past the Mammoth ski resort to the forest service entrance for Devils Postpile. They turned us around and said we had to use the mandatory shuttle bus. We had lunch and bought shuttle tickets.
After a nauseating 45 minute bus ride (not helpful that I was sucked into the book 'The Kite Runner' and was reading most of the way down), we arrived at the trail head. The postpile was as grand as expected, and we hiked the upper and lower trails to see it from the top and underneath. It is an obsidian dome formed under the ground that cooled into hexagonal posts. Eventually, the earth around the dome erroded and exposed the interesting formation.
In the evening, we fueld up on an Italian dinner and bought a book on Eastern Sierra hot springs, and headed for bed early.
